The Mahale Mountains on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in the far west of southern Tanzania is singularly the best destination to get in amongst truly habituated chimpanzees. This is a very remote and beautiful destination on the shores of an extraordinary lake that is 420 miles long, 30 miles across, and with a depth of over 4,000 feet in places. The Mahale mountains descend into the lake and are the home to families of chimpanzees that have been studied for over 40 years, and so are totally habituated to being approached by humans on foot.
Being in amongst these incredible apes in their forested home here in the Mahale Mountains is an extraordinary unique wildlife experience. It is a very special and exhilarating experience when you hear their hooting calls echoing through the forest, and then get to be with them as part of their lives for a short period of time.
